According to Jean-François Roques, head of the food and pharmaceutical applications division at Carbagas: “Carbagas’ objective is to supply industrial gases and innovative solutions which meet our customers’ needs and fulfil the highest quality standards.’

Air Liquide is the world leader in the supply of gases for industrial, medical and environmental applications and has 42,300 employees in more than 75 countries. Oxygen, nitrogen, hydrogen and rare gases have been at the core of Air Liquide’s activities since the company was founded. Using these products, Air Liquide continuously reinvents its business, anticipating the needs of current and future markets.

Carbagas, which was established in 1893, is the Swiss subsidiary of Air Liquide. It has more than 300 highly skilled employees working in more than 50 different job categories. Carbagas produces and processes the majority of its gases in Switzerland. The company has production and gas cylinder filling plants in Wiler, Basel, Visp, Zurzach, Münchwilen, Domdidier and Rümlang. Its gas cylinders are sold via more than 60 sales outlets in Switzerland.

The production of industrial gases in cryogenic form at low temperatures or under high pressure in gas cylinders is a risky business. For this reason, Air Liquide and Carbagas make safety one of their highest priorities. Carbagas shares its expertise in handling gases safely with customers who use its gases.

A range of new applications to meet today’s needs …

Air Liquide has developed a solution known as VOXAL for processing effluent gas which allows volatile organic compounds (VOCs) to be separated from the main gas flow. It is based on the principle of cryocondensation and enables solvents and/or hydrocarbons to be extracted without creating new pollutants or contaminants. The substances that are recovered can then be recycled.

… and tomorrow’s

The research and engineering teams at Air Liquide are meeting this challenge by constantly developing new solutions, such as gas production processes and new IT-based applications and services which offer high levels of added value. They have the perfect solution to meet every need.

Industrial gases for laboratories and the pharmaceutical industry
The main industrial gases are oxygen, nitrogen, hydrogen and rare gases. They are used in almost all sectors, including the automotive industry, industrial production, the manufacture of materials and power generation. In the food and pharmaceutical industries, industrial gases are employed, among other things, in packaging, inerting procedures, production and cryogenic applications. In technology and research, ultra pure gases form part of the analysis and manufacturing processes for photovoltaic cells and LEDs.
In all these applications, the safe handling and the quality of the gases from production through to delivery to the site where they will be used are governed by strict regulations. Regular and ongoing checks, compliance with the European Pharmacopoeia and the United States Pharmacopoeia (USP) and production processes which follow good manufacturing practice (GMP) regulations guarantee that every one of Carbagas’ products meets the necessary requirements.
